Patrick Hall,
Tasmanian artist and designer, in his recent If They Should Accidentally
Fall installation uses decals to put human faces onto everyday bottles.
A decal is a design
prepared on special paper allowing the design to be then transferred to another
surface such as glass or ceramic. The process was invented by Simon Francois
Ravenet, a French engraver about 1750 but many improved upon it. Decals
revolutionised ceramic decorations and lead to a ‘decal craze’ in the 19
century. One of the most famous decal pattern is the willow pattern.
Inspired by Patrick
Hall’s artwork, I will be using decals to transfer texts onto my ceramic pieces
to provide a vignette about the piece.
