BEN RICHARDSON'S Elias Stent

Elias Stent
University of Tasmania

Ben Richardson’s process begins with testing wild clays and raw materials for glazes to determine its capabilities, adding plastic materials like kaolin or non-plastic such as feldspar and quartz to increase stability and reduce shrinkage of the clay. Richardson’s work is mostly done on the wheel believing the wheel is a tool for rapid changes and enjoys the expanding gesture of the spinning wheel.

Richardson follows up his wheel work with texturing the surface of the clay to mimic shapes and patterns inspired by nature. Richardson will turn pieces too create his desired edges and smoothness followed by glazing to add colour and burnished affects when fired in a gas or electric kiln.
