As a great deal of Tom Samek’s art is about humans’ relationship with wine and food, I wanted to similarly make some pieces about this theme except for cigarettes and coffee. Samek’s work is inspired by his love for food and wine although this isn’t obvious at first glance as the ‘black humour’ within them adds a sort of dark twisted side. I believed this duel view could be applied to cigarettes and coffee also.

I initially sketched out the compositions, then re-did them in illustrator creating the piece I desired, although I wanted to see how analogue varieties would work, especially in comparison to the digital ones. As a result, I created charcoal versions as well as ones in which the red and yellow levels were increased through Photoshop. I did this initially to have pieces with duality although the increased red and yellow also added a dusty aesthetic.
